IN THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, MARINES TAKE TIME TO REMEMBER TWO ICONIC BATTLES IN THE HISTORY OF OUR CORPS;THE BATTLE OF CHAPULTEPEC AND THE BATTLE OF INCHON.ON SEPTEMBER13th,1847, JUST OUTSIDE OF MEXICO CITY, U.S. MARINES AND SOLDIERS STORMED THE CASTLE OF CHAPULTEPEC. UPON ENTERINGTHE CASTLE, KNOWN AS THE HALLS OF MONTEZUMA, THEY RAISED THE AMERICAN FLAG,SYMBOLIZING THEIR VICTORY. THE MARINES’ ACTIONS DURINGTHE BATTLE OF CHAPULTEPEC ARE IMMORTALIZEDIN THE OPENING LINES OF THE MARINES’ HYMN, “FROM THE HALLS OF MONTEZUMA...”TO HONORTHE LARGE NUMBER OF OFFICERS AND NONCOMMISSIONED OFFICERS KILLED DURING THE BATTLE, THE “BLOOD STRIPE”WAS ADDED TO THEDRESS BLUE UNIFORMSOF OFFICERS AND N-C-OS.MORE THAN100 YEARS LATER ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, 1950,DURING THE KOREAN WAR,U.S. MARINES CONDUCTEDAN AMPHIBIOUS LANDING AT THE PORT OF INCHON, ROUGHLY 200 MILES SOUTH OF THE 38THPARALLEL.EIGHT HOURS LATER, 13,000 MARINES WERE ASHORE AND ATTACKING FORWARD TOWARDS KIMPO AIRFIELD AND SEOUL.THE LANDINGS WERE A DECISIVE VICTORY AND A STRATEGIC TURNING POINT IN THE WAR –WITHIN A MONTH, AMERICAN FORCES HAD CAPTURED MORE THAN 130,000 ENEMY TROOPS.AND THAT’S YOUR MARINE MINUTE.
