U.S. Naval War College’s (NWC) commencement ceremony
Defense Media Activity - Navy Production
June 15, 2018 | 01:45:22
Secretary of Defense James N. Mattis will deliver the commencement address to the graduates.
The resident graduating class includes 426 U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard and civilian government employees who attended either the College of Naval Warfare or College of Naval Command and Staff; and 103 international naval officers representing 50 countries who attended either the Naval Command College or Naval Staff College.
Additionally, 1,109 students completed their coursework through the College of Distance Education, which includes NWC programs at Naval Postgraduate School in Naval Station Newport, Newport, RI, Fleet Seminar Program, online and CD-ROM programs.
Established in 1884, NWC is the oldest institution of its kind in the world. More than 50,000 students have graduated since its first class of nine students in 1885 and about 300 of today’s active duty admirals, generals and senior executive service leaders are alumni. Since creating a program for international officers in 1956, the college has more than 4,500 international alumni from 137 countries worldwide. Approximately 10 percent of these alumni have gone on to become chief of their country’s respective navy.
