Happy Lactation Awareness Month
U.S. Army Medical Command
Aug. 1, 2021 | 1:36
Army Col. Katherine Kimball-Ayers, the Army Pediatrics Consultant to the Surgeon General of the Army, speaks about the importance of Breast Feeding and the recognition of Lactation Consultation Awareness Week.
Medical research, including of military soldiers (Military Medicine 2019) proves breastfeeding has significant benefits for both mother and child. Breastfeeding is therefore encouraged and supported by both Army and US policies. Many Army and other reputable resources are available to assist nursing mothers. This site provides a collection of resources to meet the unique needs of the breastfeeding service member.
What Army Regulations address breastfeeding and lactation support?
• Army Regulation 600-20, Army Command Policy (2020) section 5-5 is the primary source of requirements for breastfeeding and lactation support. Additional Army policies address other specific topics that can be found on the APHC Breastfeeding Policy web page (APHC).
• Details about breastfeeding and lactation policy are required to be established by local installation plans. Submitting a breastfeeding support plan memorandum for approval by a commander can assist Soldiers in breastfeeding upon return to military duty.
• See common questions related to Army Policy about free breast pumps, where breastmilk can be stored in field settings, and what uniforms can be worn.
What can I use to educate leaders and Soldiers about Army breastfeeding and lactation?
Check out this slide deck: Breastfeeding as an Active Duty Soldier [coming soon]
What guidance is there pertaining to breastfeeding and COVID-19?
The Army has prepared this information (APHC).
What other information on breastfeeding is recommended?
See the APHC Breastfeeding Resources web page and also pertinent Policies (APHC).
