3rd Infantry Division inducts new Marne Hall of Fame
3rd Infantry Division
Nov. 3, 2022 | 1:25
The 3rd Infantry Division is proud to announce the next class of nine inductees to the Marne Hall of Fame, including 107-year-old Silver Star recipient Harold Nelson. The Marne Hall of Fame honors Dogface Soldiers who served in the Division and had a lasting impact on the 3rd Infantry Division, our Army and nation.
Marne Hall of Fame nominees are U.S. military members (Officers, Warrant Officers, Noncommissioned Officers, and Soldiers) of 3rd ID who have brought great honor to the division through deed, sacrifice, or achievement. The 2022 inductees to the Marne Hall of Fame are:
• Sgt. 1st Class Alwyn Cashe
• Capt. Michael Daly
• Staff Sgt. Harold Nelson
• Master Sgt. Juan Negrón
• Capt. Arlo Olson
• Sgt. 1st Class Agustín Ramos Calero
• Pvt. Demensio Rivera
• Sgt. 1st Class Paul R. Smith
• Maj. Gen. Keith Ware
Maj. Gen. Keith Ware attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, and was commissioned a second lieutenant of infantry on July 18, 1942. Ware served as a Dogface Soldier in multiple command positions during his time in the 3rd Infantry Division.
Ware sailed with the 3rd ID on October 22, 1942, from Hampton Roads, Virginia, and was part of the North African invasion force. He participated in the Algeria-French Morocco and Tunisian Campaigns. The next major operations he participated in were the invasion of Sicily, the Naples-Foggia battles of southern Italy, the landings at Anzio Beachhead and then on the St.Tropez beaches of southern France in August of 1944. On December 26, 1944, while serving as battalion commander of 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry near Sigolsheim, France, Ware went forward of the front-line elements of his command and for two hours reconnoitered a strongly held enemy position. He then led a small patrol forward and destroyed or captured four machine-gun positions and killed numerous enemy riflemen. Half of the patrol, including himself, were wounded, but he refused medical attention until the position was captured by his men. For these actions he received the Medal of Honor in 1945.
Ware died on September 13, 1968, when his helicopter was shot down by Vietnamese forces.
