USS Vincennes was the first U.S. Navy ship to reach Antarctica, George H. Wheeler and William H. Gowan were awarded the Medal of Honor, Navy destroyers John D. Ford, Parrott, Pope, and Paul Jones sank four Japanese transport ships in the battle of Makassar Strait.
