U.S. Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Paul Zukunft recognizes the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star from Seattle for their quick-thinking and ingenuity that helped save the mission of the nation’s only heavy icebreaker during a recent deployment to Antarctica June 16, 2016, at 9:30 a.m. The Cutter Polar Star has been in service for more than 40 years and is the nation’s only heavy icebreaker capable of providing year-round access to the Arctic Ocean and operating in Antarctic. The cutter is currently in dry dock at Vigor Shipyards in Seattle in preparation for its next deployment to Antarctica later this year. Coast Guard Photo by Petty Officer 2nd Class Patrick Kelley.
