Ships Depart for Sea Phase, RIMPAC 2014
Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet
July 8, 2014 | 2:58
PEARL HARBOR (July 8, 2014) – The Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), guided-missile destroyer USS Spruance (DDG 111), Halifax-class frigate, and the HMCS Calgary (FFG 335) depart Pearl Harbor for the at-sea phase of Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2014. Twenty-two nations, more than 40 ships and six submarines, about 200 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 26 to August 1, in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. The world's largest international maritime exercise, RIMPAC provides a unique training opportunity that helps participants foster and sustain the cooperative relationships that are critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and security on the world's oceans. RIMPAC 2014 is the 24th exercise in the series that began in 1971. (Canadian Forces Combat Camera video by MCpl Melissa Spence/Released)
