FEMA Grants $7.6 Million to Upgrade Puerto Rico Forensic Science Institute

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, August 13, 2020 - Approved $7.6 million for the Puerto Rico Forensic Science Institute. These funds are earmarked for structural repairs and the replacement of specialized equipment at the only forensic investigation center of its kind on the island. With the funds approved by FEMA, the Forensic Science Institute covers gas chromatography processing machines, a flame ionization detector and nitrogen generators. Also, improvements will be made to: autopsy rooms, toxicology, histopathology, controlled substances and forensic anthropology laboratories, evidence receipt and storage rooms, ballistics office and pathology offices. This, along with robust structural work on the building to make it a more resilient one. To date, FEMA has obligated nearly $9.3 million to the Institute between emergency and permanent work following Hurricane Maria.FEMA/Eduardo Martinez
